As a Chicana and educator, Deborah Kuetzpalin Vasquez’s artwork has always reflected her life and her raza (people). She created the character Citlali, La Chicana Super Hero because of the lack of positive images of her people in majority culture. Citlali’s metaphoric conception through the love of two Indigenous Diosas, reaffirming the idea of magnificent women conceiving powerful women through traditional and contemporary teachings, oral histories and art, and most importantly, example. Citlali has become the focus of her artistic career, and with this character she have participated in over thirty-five exhibitions including several one-woman shows, both nationally and internationally. |
